Why the Gates of Lodore Should Be Your Next Rafting Destination

The Gates of Lodore in Dinosaur National Monument is a guide favorite for a reason – it’s a truly remarkable rafting trip! From crisp, clear waters to outstanding scenery and pristine beaches, it’s no wonder so many people flock to this canyon.

One of the things that sets the Gates of Lodore apart from other rafting stretches is the Green River’s controlled flow. This section of the river flows downstream from the dam at Flaming Gorge, which means that the water remains quite clear, having not picked up much sediment yet. The swirls of silty and clear water at the confluence of the Green and Yampa Rivers near Steamboat Rock are truly mesmerizing. What’s more, the releases from the dam help to moderate the water levels, even during this year of extreme run-off as the managing agencies work hard to refill Flaming Gorge and prevent flooding downstream. The flows are still great for rafting, but are moderate enough that youth and adults alike will enjoy the adventure.

Our trips through the Gates of Lodore offer a variety of boats to choose from, including paddle boats, inflatable kayaks, and oar boats. We encourage our guests to switch it up and try all the different options. The Gates of Lodore is also famous for its awesome hikes, including waterfalls that are sure to impress.

But it’s not just about rafting and hikes. The Gates of Lodore is rich in history, having been explored by some of the earliest adventurers, including John Wesley Powell. Along the river, you’ll find ancient petroglyphs and other historical sites that speak to the area’s past.

Of course, the real draw of any trip through the Gates of Lodore is the adventures that await. Whether you’re a seasoned rafter or a beginner, you’ll find plenty of excitement as you navigate the rapids and explore the side canyons. And, as you’re camping under the stars, keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife that calls this area home, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, elk, and even bears or mountain lions.
